General Accountability:

Private Markets Asia Director will be responsible for manage execution of Private Markets Asia inorganic development initiatives (acquisitions, strategic investments, JVs, lift-outs) aligned with the Private Markets’ Asia strategy and vision, as well as coordinating the post acquisition integration.

Responsibilities:

  • Research potential acquisitions across Private Markets asset classes
  • End to end transaction support within the Private Markets business unit, working closely with Private Markets leadership, Corporate Development and other functional teams
  • Support integration of businesses working closely with Private Markets asset class leads and functional partners
  • Support Private Markets leadership in developing and maintaining relationships with key outside service providers
  • Deliver business cases and manage prioritization and approval processes within Private Markets for inorganic development initiatives
  • Be current on the latest trends developing within and externally to the private assets space, with an eye to understanding impact to the Private Markets business and inorganic development opportunities
  • Manage and maintain processes within Private Markets to support business expansion and growth across asset classes and geographies:

  • >> Develop and apply prioritization framework
  • >> Develop relationships with key internal stakeholders and partners
  • >> Understand inorganic development needs from within the business
  • Develop and maintain catalogue of inorganic growth opportunities across the private assets space, with a focus on Private Markets’ current asset classes as well as growth opportunities in emerging asset classes
  • >> Pro-active M&A Lists Templates for scoring and prioritizing opportunities
  • >> Trackers for all relevant activity contacts among service providers and principals
  • Working with Corporate Development, co-ordinate due diligence activities with respect to potential targets and counterparties, bringing internal stakeholders together, gathering input, and ensuring compliance with Manulife’s risk management appetite and frameworks.
  • Prepare transaction related materials including:Timelines, checklistsSector and opportunity overviewsBusiness casesApproval presentationsStakeholder communications.
  • Maintain strong relationships with Manulife’s Corporate Development, WAM Strategy, WAM Finance, Legal and other functional partners
  • Working with Corporate Development, interface with external service providers and industry relationships relevant to the mandate
  • Conduct research, in collaboration with the Private Markets Strategy group, to assess growth opportunities and support strategic and inorganic development opportunities for Private Markets Asia

 

Specialist Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a top University required; CFA, MBA or similar an asset
  • Bachelors degree required; CFA, MBA or similar an asset
  • Minimum 6 years of total professional experience in management consulting, investment banking, investment transactions, private markets, or a corporate development related role in the financial services industry
  • Knowledge of or experience in private assets industry
  • Prior exposure to some / all of the Private Markets’ asset classes a plus (private equity and credit, real estate equity and debt, timberland, farmland and infrastructure)
  • Corporate transaction experience (particularly with direct exposure to business diligence issues and post-acquisition responsibility) is desirable
  • Demonstrated analytical, accounting/financial, and communication skills
  • Strong research skills to gather, synthesis and communicate findings to inform and support key initiatives
  • Strong business and financial acumen
  • Strong communication skills
  • Problem solving skills – ability to take complex questions and break down into answerable components
  • Self-starter – ability to define and execute on the research strategy and bring the vision and operating model into fruition
  • Strong influencing skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a small team and in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Language skills:  Mandarin would be strongly preferred

                     

Problems/Challenges:

  • Support to execute the M&A and post acquisition strategy for Private Markets Asia
  • Communicating effectively with senior management of prospective targeting fund managers
  • Supporting and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.  
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships within acquisition targets and internal stakeholders.
  • Taking initiative to move a project forward in the absence of immediate guidance from senior investment professionals.
