Associate, Technology Banking Underwriting

Job Description

RBC Technology Banking group provides capital to support promising founders and their investors, primarily venture capital firms. You will work as part of a deal team in executing new investment opportunities and supporting portfolio investments for pre-profit technology companies. You will work with the senior underwriters to perform research, conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis and present to a Committee to recommend an investment decision. 


What will you do?

  • Be a key member of a small, highly focused team
  • Assist in assessing, executing and managing transactions
  • Collaborate with RBC partners (mainly Commercial Account managers) to assess client and prospect opportunities and develop prudent capital structures to meet client growth needs
  • Lead due diligence, structuring and closing of deals
  • Perform appropriate due diligence including:
    • management, history and track record
    • sponsor / investor support and likelihood of raising future rounds of funding including interacting with financial intermediaries, advisors and sponsors (venture capital firms) 
    • industry reviews from a variety of sources to provide the team with comparable company information and industry insight on trends and areas of opportunity
    • unique technology, IP, patents, valuations, potential buyers and exit plans
    • review, analysis, interpretation and critique company prepared reports and projections
    • financial modeling, recurring revenue calculations and financial statement analysis
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for deal committee
  • Monitor portfolio company results including comparisons to budget, performance to plan, cash runway and burn rate and assist in portfolio company valuations for internal reporting
  • Assist in other aspects of the investment process as required


Specialist Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., business, economics, engineering)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications specifically Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Word
  • Strong industry research analytical skills, financial statement analysis
  • Previous experience with financial modelling and investment valuation
  • Proven credit structuring and underwriting skills
  • Lending experience and/or experience in Investment Banking


Nice to have:

  • MBA or other post-graduate degree
  • CFA, CMA, CA, CBV or other relevant professional designation
  • Experience in mezzanine financing, investment banking, corporate finance, corporate development or venture capital, private equity, technology start-up as CFO etc.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
