Strategy Manager

Job Description

This role leads the Strategy team for Fuels Southern Africa (Fuels SA) and is the primary assurance role in Fuels SA to lead and deliver a strategic vision for the Fuels SA Value Chain, develop the medium term Strategy Financial Shape for Fuels SA and strategic Investment Pipeline for Fuels SA.

The Strategy Manager – Fuels SA is accountable to the Head of Strategy & Transformation for developing, maintaining and updating the BP Southern African Fuels SA Strategy ensuring its alignment to BP Group, Downstream and Fuels Europe and Southern Africa (Fuels ESA) Strategy whilst reflecting the local business environment.

This role is expected to have a clear grasp of current business performance and bring to bear opportunities to improve business performance through delivery of the agreed strategy.

The incumbent will require deep understanding of how the integrated Fuels Value Chain (FVC) value creation levers work and how they contribute to corporate success. Understand the complex product and production relationships between refinery and petrochemical products supplied to the market and how they mutually chip in to the success of each other and in relation to the market demand.

  • Lead the Fuels SA Strategy and revise as necessary to improve current business performance and deliver a Strategy Refresh Financial Shape and Strategy Deck that describes:
    • Market Trends & Dynamics
    • BP’s competitive position
    • Opportunities
    • Strategy for the medium term (5 years)
  • Lead the development of a cohesive view for each Channel of Trade (CoT) of how to win and delivering a 5 year Financial Shape by CoT (Refining, Retail South Africa, B2B South Africa, Supply South Africa, Retail Mozambique, B2B Mozambique, Supply Mozambique) and consolidated Fuels SA.
  • Develop strategic insights into the Fuels SA existing business & geography.
  • Work with the Regulatory and GPA Teams to understanding regulatory trends and identify business impacts/opportunities.
  • Facilitate the process that allocates the discretionary capex within Fuels SA, working with the Commercial Business Management (CBM) Projects Finance Manager.
  • Co-ordinate the BPSA legal entity Strategy process (i.e. including International Business in BPSA)
  • Work closely with the Fuels SA Leadership Team (LT) and their respective Strategy Implementation Teams and needs to develop a strong working relationship with these teams. Engage the Fuels SA LT on the Strategy, provide them with the tools to enable them to effectively communicate the strategy throughout their organisation and co-facilitate these sessions.
  • Establish a regional view of competitor activity, strategic intent and monitor competitive moves and the impact on the Fuels SA strategic delivery and understand the Southern African business environment and external market trends and amend the strategy accordingly.
  • Explore and define growth opportunities aligned to the Strategy and develop the economic value attributable to individual strategy options.
  • Monitor the long term capital return trends on investments and determination of economic value of merger and acquisition activities.
  • Manage external institutional relations (e.g. with Institute of Futures Research, Bureau of Economics Research, NKC independent Economist) and communicate meaningful current and future trends within the Leadership.
  • Accountable for leading the Strategy team.


Specialist Experience

Educational and Experience

a. Educational background

Degree qualified in Commercial field with further post graduate qualification (e.g. MBA) advantageous

b. Experience (years and nature)

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Fuels SA environments of Finance, Strategy or Portfolio Development. Eye for business, commercial experience and knowledge of Fuels Value Chain activities. Deep knowledge and understanding of Refining and Supply business drivers and dynamics and the ability to implement strategy.
  • Strong refinery knowledge coupled with a commercial mind-set.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively & influence at all levels
  • Solid understanding of the South African FVC competitor and external business environment
  • Ability to turn data into useful and significant management information and insights and to present it effectively.
  • Strong analytical skills and understanding of Financials with a high attention to detail. Accurate and numerate and with the ability to both conceptualise and translate concepts into operational actions. Sound knowledge of MS-Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent networking skills - a high level of interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Self-starter with Completer-Finisher skills - ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work and behave federally, great teammate, yet able to work independently
