Global Head of Learning, Pharmaceuticals

Job Description

Novartis has the ambition to be the best company for learning and development opportunities and your role is significant towards this. You will be responsible for the Learning experience of c. 30,000 Pharmaceutical division associates (permanent employees) globally across 100+ countries, leading the Pharma Learning Strategy and delivery of world-class learning solutions that empower our associates to develop into their best self.

You will lead a cross-Pharma functional Learning community, building capability, consistency and access to tools for all learning-related associates. Creating and executing strategies that use emerging technologies and learning science to support the capabilities of our associates, also integrating solutions from the Learning CoE & Novartis University, you will work closely with the Chief Learning Officer, Novartis Learning Council / Learning Leadership Team and a global Pharma Learning community of 3-400 associates to achieve this ambition and help shape the global Novartis Learning Strategy/Transformation.

1. Member of the Novartis Learning Council: represent Pharma learning needs and influence the Learning strategy / transformation of Novartis. Align and develop the Pharma functional learning model with services provided by the Novartis Learning CoE (management, leadership, soft skills) and continue to evolve the model

2. Implement the Novartis Learning Strategy & the Novartis People Strategy in partnership with the Pharma People & Organizaton (P&O) Team. Support Novartis to become the best company for learning and development by ensuring a culture of curiosity and continuous learning is embedded into the Pharma strategy and approach

3. Lead innovation within the learning approach and solutions with the latest technologies and measure impact through data/analytics integrated with key business data. Enhance data and analytics for learning to achieve a much greater understanding of learning activity and impact and use this to drive continuous improvements

4. Lead the identification and building of strategic capabilities (e.g launch excellence) over the mid to long-term in partnership with Pharma Leadership, prioritizing resources to have the greatest impact.

5. Lead, develop, implement and monitor global, regional and local Learning solutions and programs for all Pharma functions (commercial, medical, etc.), enabling the Pharma strategy 

6. Deliver ongoing innovation, effectiveness and efficiency in Pharma learning solutions, partnering with other Novartis learning teams and external partners to reuse / repurpose existing solutions where possible e.g. management, leadership

7. Lead engagement with brand teams to enhance learning model for brand training with new technology to support challenges such as translation and country adaptation.

8. Ensure standardized global processes and methodologies are implemented across Pharma and aligned to internal existing and emerging operating models.

9. Lead, coach, develop and grow a cross-Pharma capability-building team as part of the Novartis global learning community and ensure they have the right skills to succeed.

10. Ensure the appropriate structures, resources and solutions are in place to address capability needs for all Pharma associates.

11. Embed the Novartis Learning system into Pharma. Including creation of role-based curricula for all roles, cataloguing / review of all learning solutions and uptake of competency / skills framework.

12. Achieve the integration and alignment of strategic and operational aspects of learning across Pharma. Liaise with related training groups (e.g. Learning CoE, Novartis University, PLS Training Design and Development Team, Quality Training Team, Onco Commercial Excellence etc) to ensure ease of use for learners, optimal utilization of resources and highest possible learning impact.

13. Ensure GxP learning needs within Pharma are fully met and compliance requirements are maintained.

14. Support the Pharma Learning Partners, P&O Business Partners and Business Leaders in the diagnosis of organizational capability gaps and the identification, development and implementation of suitable learning solutions, ensuring adequate senior management approval and support.

15. Enhance the organizational performance of Pharma through the development and delivery of effective learning solutions. Ensure alignment and integration with Talent Management and Organizational Development and P&O efforts.

16. Support the development of the Novartis learning reputation externally through appropriate publicity and Thought Leadership

Success indicators:
• Measurable positive impact on Pharma Business goals as a result of Learning’s support of Pharma associates developing their capabilities, skills and behaviors 
• Clear learning approach for Pharma that is aligned with the Pharma Strategy and Novartis Learning Strategy
• Role-based curricula in place for key Pharma roles aligned with Oncology / Sandoz as necessary, building capability of the organization
• Data analytics in place that show effectiveness of learning activity against business goals
• Clients (Pharma CEO, Pharma Executive Committee Members, Head P&O Pharma) recognize added-value of learning / training support 

Specialist Experience

Minimum requirements

• University degree in social science, business degree or equivalent management experience
• Desirable: further education in e.g. Educational Sciences, Change Management, Project Management, Coaching, MBA/PhD

• Fluent in English: other languages desirable

• Expert Learning content alongside Transformation and Innovation skills – your knowledge is deep and broad enabling you to lead world-class learning change across global complex organisations
• Pharmaceutical industry experience not required as long as have experience from large complex global enterprises where you successfully introduced new learning strategies, innovative learning methods and technologies for a highly educated workforce that transformed the employee’s learning experience and increased their success
• Enterprise-level strategic experience alongside operationally leading learning models and processes 
• Advanced project management experience with sophisticated planning and problem solving skills, demonstrated by a record of successful major project and process management transformations. Used to matrix managing large international program teams
• Advanced change management skills with proven success in previous change programs
• Advanced leadership experience from previous global or international leadership roles and from line managing direct reports in different locations
