The Head of Institutional, Canada will be responsible for developing and leading the team in executing the Canadian Institutional business strategy (DB, DC, F&E, First Nations, Corporate, etc).  The Canadian Institutional business is responsible for all facets of the institutional market in Canada, inclusive of existing clients and prospects, sales, relationship management, consultant relations, other.  It is anticipated that the Head of Institutional, Canada will be personally fully engaged with all disciplines and activity on a practical level and act as a player / coach with the current team to execute the institutional sales plan.

In addition, the Head of Institutional, Canada will work closely with members of the broader Canadian business and leadership team, Portfolio Managers, Institutional Portfolio Managers, Product Specialists & Development, Client Service, Global and Local Marketing teams, amongst others.

The Head of Institutional, Canada will have line management responsibility for the overall Canadian Institutional team; will set channel and team objectives consistent with the agreed Canadian institutional strategy; and will identify and adopt institutional best practices to ensure the profitable growth of the Canadian institutional business.  

What are the ongoing responsibilities of the Head of Institutional – Canada?

  • Be a player / coach and be active with personal network to advance the business and coach the team

  • Participation in all aspects of the institutional business (sales, client relations, consultant relations, business strategy, etc.)

  • Participation in product development and strategy discussions

  • Engagement with supporting functional areas

  • Participation in Industry Forums

  • Attendance at Institutional Conferences

  • Active leadership in Canadian market

  • Management of Institutional P & L


Specialist Experience


  • Substantial relevant experience of the Canadian institutional market

  • Demonstrable record of personal success in the Canadian institutional market

  • Experience of successfully defining and delivering a Canadian institutional strategy

  • CFA (preferred), MBA, or advanced industry designations/experience

  • Current relevant knowledge of Canadian institutional business landscape, and market participants

  • Excellent current competitor knowledge
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.  For verbal updates in formal or informal settings, this requires exceptional organizational and investment knowledge, the ability to handle challenging questions and the ability to present the material in a logical, professional and understandable manner.

  • Excellent leadership, team attitude and technical skills.

  • Maintain a supportive, positive attitude within the organization and with our clients, consultants and other stakeholders.

  • Be an active member of the leadership team for the Canadian business to ensure success and growth across all lines of business

  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Team player who earns respect and commitment by leading from the front

  • Proven ability to coach and develop others

  • Ability to travel

  • Bilingual an asset (English/French)
