Analytical Instruments Group (AIG) - Materials & Structural Analysis Division (MSD) 

Our Thermo Scientific brand in the analytical instruments group offers customers in research, academic, industrial and applied markets a complete range of high-end analytical instruments as well as laboratory equipment, software and services. In the materials and structural analysis division we design, manu-facture, and support the broadest range of high-performance microscopy workflows that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales. 

Position Summary

The Life Science Business Unit (LSBU) within Thermo Fisher Scientific MSD develops and manufactures tools for biological research. The core of LSBU offerings is the Nobel prize-winning technology used for 3D volume imaging. 

The LSBU is expanding its team in order to support and accelerate the growth of its business in the new area of cryo-electron tomography (CT). CT provides multiscale datasets of the inner works of cells without chemical fixation or contrasting. The CT technology got an extreme attention in the microscopy and life science community in the past 2 years with numerous publications in the prestigious scientific journals, such as Nature and Cell. CT has the potential to revolutionize the field of Cell Biology, Neuroscience, and Microbiology.
The (Senior) Product Marketing Manager will be an integral part of CT team, responsible for developing and executing on CT product marketing strategy, including product positioning, market segmentation, and targeting. This position contributes to generating growth for CT products worldwide through demand creation and funnel acceleration in collaboration with Regional and Divisional Marketing, Product Management, Sales and Business Development; and supporting future product planning by identifying market trends and customer needs.


  • Working in compliance with Thermo Fisher legislation and IMS
  • Develop qualitative and quantitative customer insights and market trends – Collect Voice of the Customer and market trends to identify customer needs. Use results to provide: a) market requirements to Product Management and R&D; b) effective training and customer facing material (“sales kits”) to Sales & Business Development; c) briefing documents for outbound marketing, communication and PR business partners.
  • Product Marketing Innovation – Create value proposition and product positioning for existing and new products as well as entire workflows for specific markets, market segments and applications. Validate those with key customers and internal business partners.
  • Strategic Product Marketing Planning & Execution – Assess and understand needs of customers and markets, contribute to product marketing plans to create approaches that will provide impactful access to individual markets and market areas. Conduct competitive analysis and develop competitive positioning, establish effective pricing, bundling, and packaging. Define and monitor key metrics to ensure success of the marketing plan.
  • Sales & Business Development Support – Train and support regional Sales and Business Development teams. Support new product (NPI) sales promotions in the field.


Specialist Experience

The ideal candidate has in depth experience in product marketing or product management in life sciences with the following qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in Product Management, Product Marketing or Consulting in the life sciences industry
  • Experience with large capital equipment is preferred, but not required
  • Bachelor/Masters degree in a science/engineering field, PhD or MBA preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the academia research market
  • Ability to create a vision of a product or workflow, translate it into tailored marketing and value-based product marketing strategy for a given target market
  • Experience in interacting with customers in the life science research field
  • Excellent presentation, communication ability (both written and verbal) and influencing skills.
  • Knowledge of marketing best practices, including digital marketing, metrics tracking and customer experience management
  • Team oriented – must have ability to work well with globally diverse, cross-functional teams across multiple time zones, cultures and languages
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally (30%)
  • Ability to build strong relationships with key business partners and customers to impact growth
  • Highly developed commercial sensibility; ability to recognize growth opportunities and execute on them
