About This Opportunity

Based in Montreal and reporting to the Senior Manager, Human Resources East, the HR Generalist acts as a key HR support for the Company in its East Operating Unit in Canada (“East OU”), including Ottawa, Quebec and the Maritimes.  The HR Generalist is the lead contact for the Operating Unit’s salaried and hourly non-union workforce and is involved in all issues related to Human Resources including the hiring/recruitment process, employee relations, compensation, benefits, training and development and talent management.   In support of their internal clients, the HR Generalist works collaboratively with HR Lean Centre Resources (Total Rewards, Labour Relations, and Employee Relations), as well as their Talent Acquisition and Human Resources - Labour Relations Business Partners, to ensure timely delivery of business solutions within the framework of the HR strategy.   The HR Generalist also provides advice and consultative services to the East OU leadership and management teams. 

In this role you will:

  • Coach/advise/assist managers on complex and diverse employee issues (i.e. performance management, attendance management, disability management, workplace investigations, employee exits), including compiling and preparing evidence to support appropriate recommendations.
  • Field, investigate and resolve employee issues, concerns regarding the full range of HR subject areas.
  • Provide coaching and consultative support to management on leadership development, talent and performance management, change and people management issues
  • Provide overall employee relations support to all salary and non-union hourly inquiries regarding policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate Human Resources training programs.
  • Build effective relationships with internal clients to understand their business goals to proactively identify and implement solutions in line with Company strategy.
  • Monitor employee engagement and retention and suggest recommendations where required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and best practices to influence HR strategies, policies and procedures;
  • Drive implementation of function-wide HR programs including learning programs, change management initiatives and business processes;
  • Champion the performance and talent management processes in the Region including participation in talent reviews and succession planning; and
  • Ensure activities are in compliance with all provincial and federal employment laws and regulations dealing with human resources.
  • Support the Company's positive employee relations efforts and performs other duties as assigned.


Specialist Experience

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Law degree, and/or bachelor’s degree or advanced degree such as MBA or MS/MA (in Human Resources, Labour Relations, Organization Development, Organization Behavior, Organizational Psychology, Consulting, Psychology, Industrial Organization Psychology, or similar related discipline) is preferred.
  • Fluency in French & English (spoken & written);
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as an HR generalist (in a consumer goods industry preferred);
  • Customer focused with a proven record of relationship building and developing workforce plans based on business goals;
  • Comfort and ability to thrive in a high-change, fasted paced environment;
  • Proven collaboration skills with the ability to gain consensus through personal influence;
  • Demonstrated consulting, and change management skills;
  • Proven ability to make tough decisions when required;
  • Demonstrated ability to invite diverse perspectives, promote an inclusive work environment and support workforce diversity; and
  • Accomplished team-builder, skilled at inspiring, motivating and developing people.
