Manulife's Strategy team in Asia works across the company’s business, functions and geographies, supporting our Business Units and regional senior management on the development, execution and implementation of the Company’s long-term strategy. Team members have access to‎ a unique vantage point to participate and shape some of the most important strategic decisions at the company.

 

The Associate Director will have a critical role in assessing and executing Manulife Asia’s strategy which aims to drive value for Customers, Shareholders and Employees. Specifically, the individual will be heavily involved in conducting market analysis, serving as a thought partner to businesses and functions, and the evaluation and execution of key strategic initiatives that significantly contribute to Manulife’s growth aspirations. The Associate Director will report to the Head of Asia Strategy and will work closely with country business units and the Asia regional office across Manulife’s life insurance and wealth businesses.

 

The role is complex, requiring the ability to think broadly on a strategic basis,  effective engagement with subject matter experts and business leaders across and outside the organization, provide superior analysis and reasoning, and crisply communicate issues and solutions in a focused compelling manner.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and coordinate across all elements of strategy with a team of peers, senior executives from the Asia regional office, local country business units and corporate headquarters, based on a strong understanding of Manulife and its strategic ambitions.
  • Drive the development of business unit level strategies, including research on emerging trends and competitive landscape and understand impact on the business.
  • Synthesize recommendations with a clear articulation of how strategy translates into execution priorities and action plans.
  • Lead work-streams and be responsible for rigorous analysis to structure problems and present complex findings in a clear, concise, and decision-driven manner.
  • Support the implementation of the Asia strategic planning process across regional functions, country business units, and support the development of Asia strategic planning deliverables and timelines (e.g. annual strategic plan, strategy presentations, quarterly reporting, and etc.) for Asia Executive Committee, Group executive leadership team and Group Board.
  • Develop and manage project deliverables timelines, track progress against ambitions and execution.
  • Assist in managing multiple internal stakeholders and ensure effective communication informally and for formal presentations.

 

Specialist Experience

  • Strategy skills: Experience formulating strategy, familiar with key principles of strategy development including generating hypothesis, ability to think conceptually and creatively regarding solutions and opportunities.
  • Strong financial and data analysis: Ability to triangulate financial data and generate key insights to test and validate hypothesis.
  • Project management skills: Ability to drive projects through providing appropriate project framework, clarity on content and deliverables and effectively engaging and managing stakeholders.
  • Analysis, insight and problem solving: Ability to collect and collate high volumes of diverse information regarding markets, customer and risk without becoming overwhelmed.  Ability to separate critical and urgent details for integration into planning.
  • Communication skills: Has credibility and presence amongst peers and senior management through strong verbal, written and presentation skills. Expresses ideas and shares information clearly and concisely; Ability to tell a story and provide recommendations that resonate with variety of audiences.
  • Develop team members and enhance team effectiveness: Will encourage, support and develop more junior colleagues. Be an ambassador for the team, proactively seeking opportunities to engage with colleagues across Manulife.
  • Tenacity and work ethic: Has a strong sense of ownership and work ethic to see projects to completion. Is undeterred by challenges/obstacles and will remain motivated, composed and apply creating thinking to overcome them.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Accounting/Economics/Actuarial Science (MBA preferred).
  • At least 8 years work experience. Life insurance industry preferred.
  • Previous experience in strategy consulting or corporate strategy within a multinational firm considered an advantage
  • Native English and fluency in an additional Asian language is an advantage.
