Department Profile


Morgan Stanley’s Investment Banking Division builds and maintains close relationships with corporations and governments around the world in order to provide both traditional and innovative solutions that meet their individual strategic and financial needs. Vice Presidents work on assignments which include various types of different transactions (M&A, capital markets) and business development projects while interacting directly with senior-level financial and strategic decision-makers at some of the largest corporations, as well as with smaller, emerging growth clients.


The team is responsible for structuring and executing a wide range of complex domestic and international transactions including acquisitions, divestitures, mergers, joint ventures, corporate restructurings, recapitalizations, spin-offs, exchange offers, leveraged buyouts and defences against unsolicited takeover attempts. M&A also establishes and maintains strategic dialogues with existing and potential clients, provides financial advice and solutions to complex problems and assists clients in achieving short- and long-term strategic objectives. The M&A group's goal is to provide the best solution for each client by working closely with industry and country coverage groups as well as other product group areas.



Primary Responsibilities


As a VP on the South Africa Advisory team based in Johannesburg, you will work with Senior Bankers on a variety of execution and business development assignments whilst also interacting directly with senior-level financial and strategic decision-makers at some of South Africa’s largest corporations and international clients. The ideal candidate would have prior financial industry or investment banking experience with responsibilities including and not limited to:


• Creating and analysing financial models with a high degree of granularity 
• Performing financial, strategic and transaction structuring analyses
• Creating, drafting and taking ownership of presentations and memoranda for a wider audience both internally within the firm as well as externally
• Day-to-day deal execution and project management 
• Supporting the senior bankers in marketing the firm’s services
• Regular interaction with senior team members and client management teams
• Participation in client meetings on both execution and business development projects and active contribution to presentation during the meetings
• Providing support, mentorship and supervision to junior team members
• Assuming the role of staffer in the South African Investment Banking business
• Managing the recruitment process of junior bankers





Specialist Experience


• Undergraduate degree from leading university preferably from a Finance, Economics, MBA or CA (SA) background
• Extensive  relevant Investment Banking (corporate finance/M&A) experience or equivalent required
• Demonstrable analytical and modelling skills 
• Knowledge of accounting and financial concepts; ability to analyse and value businesses
• A positive, highly motivated individual who exhibits strong leadership and management qualities
• Solid understanding of professional ethics and regulatory environment 
• Highest levels of professional integrity  / work ethic and demonstrated commitment to excellence
• Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential
• Committed to delivery of highest quality work product; strong attention to detail
• Proactive, self-motivated and goal oriented
• Ability to effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines
• Keen team player able to work effectively in a team environment
• Working familiarity with the South African corporate and regulatory landscape
• Candidate should be fluent in English
